Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the program, Which way Nigeria is a programme that aims at propelling engaging Nigerian Youths in the Political Sphere, to get involved in order for them to make positive changes in the country?
The program today will be providing deliberations and discourses on repositioning youth for future leadership, how personal development such as education, skill acquisition can empower youth to become tomorrow’s leaders.
Generations upon generation were fed with value system that comes to influence their perception, behaviors, attitude and characters for centuries. Therefore, society with strong value system will experience high development and discipline group of people while, a society with weak value system will experience chaos and underdevelopment.
Although there is no universally accepted definition of whom a youth is? However, in a way of making a personal conceptual clarification, “Youth can be define as a special group of people with strong stamina and passion for realizing certain set goals and objectives”.
Also, youth share certain characteristics that distinguish them from others generation. Such characteristic include, impatient for change, zealousness, radicalism, rebellions, curiosity, hard work, ego and ambition etc.
You will agree with me, that, these are the propelling factors for national development.
Looking at these two concepts, it is safe to say, that, youth are the engine that drives national development, if their mindsets are channels in the right direction.
The 2019 general elections has finally come to a close following declaration of the winner of the river state governorship election.
The not too young to run bill was signed into law, but after the elections we discovered that very few youth got the opportunity to become political leaders, In some instances, unfortunately, many youths have been told that they are not yet ripe for responsibility or leadership and need to mature first before vying for political leadership positions.
This idea shuts the door against many meaningful contributions that young Nigerians have to offer. That being said, we have come to note that it is important for youth to engage in self-development in order to get ourselves ready for the next general election.
The development of leadership potential is a slow and gradual process that must begin from early childhood, hence, Leadership Training as a course, needs to be introduced into the Secondary school syllabus.
Key note for discussion
To stick to the principal conceptualization of the topic, I would like to elucidate the issue of self in great details.
1. Education as the path leader of the youth: It is with the help of education that the youth can choose and seek their interests. They choose their ways and directions of lives. With this, they set goals for themselves and strive to achieve them. Education propels the youth in the right, proper and straight direction.
To begin with, education is a factor of change in one’s life: Education for the youth is the medium with the help of which they can quench their thirst for realizing their potentialities. The youth should be equipped with the best possible education and facilitated with favorable conditions to, through the attainment of their skills, be an asset to the community and that way contribute actively to the development of the community, as they are essential elements of the society
2. Secondary schools should be exposed to leadership courses to prepare them for the responsibilities of Leadership.
3. The spirit of patriotism should also be inculcated in the citizens. As patriots tend to be good leaders who understand the general needs of the society.
Moreover, the Government should recognize and encourage unique and great youth leaders to inspire others and discourage criminalities among their peers.
Finally, youths should not wait till help comes their way, they should look inward and embrace self-development that can launch them into positions of leadership in line with the saying that ‘Heaven helps those who help themselves.
In one word, with proper education imparted to youth, the youth can become productive, scientific-oriented, broad-minded, and ideal citizens of the society as the society is significantly influenced by this category of people. While being youths, we are at the center of absolute strength. We think big, hope for the best and envision a better tomorrow, thereof making unceasing efforts to turn our lifelong dreams into concrete actions.
Join us again next week, for Another edition of Which Way Nigeria well rapped up, hope we learned, and hope we have connected. Thank you for being a part of which way Nigeria.
